“That we are gathered here today in such numbers is a recognition that the threat of climate change is real, it is urgent, and it is growing. Our response to this crisis will be remembered in history, for if we fail to meet it – boldly, swiftly, and collectively – we will condemn future generations to an irreversible fate.” These were the words of President Obama, which he employed in opening his global warming speech at the United Nations Summit in 2009.

Proceed to Google and type in global warming and you will have a selection of almost 65 million pages of results. The subject has obviously taken a lot of attention. But what is global warming? What causes it? What are its impacts on the world and its inhabitants? What are some of its potential solutions? These are the issues that I will be investigating in this short informative speech today.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming refers to the progressive rise in earth’s atmospheric and ocean temperatures. The average temperatures have risen during the last hundred years by barely more than a degree. That does not sound like much, but most scientists believe that earth’s temperatures are beginning to rise at a greater rate.

What Causes It

Global warming occurs when the greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere. Think about what happens if you leave the door of your car open after you have rolled up the windows on a hot day. The sun’s heat enters the car, but the frame of the car prevents it from escaping. To a smaller extent, this is a representation of what happens in the case of global warming. Fossil fuel like petroleum being burned and trees being cut down are both sources of the problem.

What Effect What Effects Does Climate Change Have on the Earth and Its Inhabitants

Global warming has already started affecting the earth in several ways. Glaciers in the Arctic already started melting, which threatens indigenous life such as the polar bears. Sea level rise is also caused by glaciers melting. This can become a problem for coastal regions like those of the South Sea Islands. Oceanic temperatures have already begun to increase. This causes some of the algae to die which can affect the entire food chain.

Some Potential Solutions to the Problem
There are things we can do to combat the effects of global warming. There is the Clean Air Act of 1990, which is an American law that attempts to conserve and improve the earth’s atmosphere and air. Some of the components of this act include stopping harmful automobile emissions and phasing out chemicals used that can damage the ozone layer. At a personal level, we can stop global warming by planting and car-pooling.

Global warming has also been viewed as one of the threats in real life and taken seriously on an international level. I hope, with this global warming speech, you have been enlightened on how it’s causing it and on the impacts which it puts to the world. It’s in your hands, now, whether you can do something about it or not.

Humans – we are assumed to be the most intelligent beings in the world. We also possess our own individual methods of speaking and interacting with others. Indeed, daily, we talk, act, and behave in a way such that our acts and words satisfy the primitive needs of society.

I like to consider my entire body a coffee machine; my heart the multi-colored coffee beans before they are ground; my head the filter, and my words and deeds as the coffee. And what do you do to coffee beans? Before you put them in the machine, they are all multi-colored and different from one another.

But when they are milled and mixed together, the individuality within each bean is lost. By the time they have passed through the filter, all anyone sees is just plain coffee that they desired. No one will ever notice the multicolored beans in the brownish liquid. Just as no one can see your original thoughts and choices, which are at odds with your words and deeds. All that is observable and can be tasted is generic, end result.

Maybe you fear that if you do not “filter” your real ideas and intentions, others will dislike or reject you. Perhaps they will judge your ideas and decisions as too bitter or too strong, and therefore you have the urge to alter or to filter your coffee beans. Other people would be so surprised if they were to glimpse MY real coffee beans. They would be amazed when they realize the real person I am.

I transferred to a different school when I was in the 4th grade. I was in my 5th week of school when I saw a kid getting bullied on the playground. I was on the swings when I overheard screeching and screaming noises from the other side of the playground. I turned around to the girl sitting beside me and asked her what was going on. She was like, “Oh, don’t mind, just the 6th graders giving the new boy in our grade a lesson.” She said it like it was all so normal. She smirked then leaned over and whispered in my ear: “Don’t go saying that I told you this but he has the plague!”

I was perplexed, so I asked her what type of plague he had, and she replied “It’s the ‘nano-plague’.” She then explained to me that it was an infectious sickness that was caught by nano worms that attached themselves to your face and put a red scar on it that could never be removed. And if you touched the victim or touched something that he touched prior to 3 seconds having elapsed, then you’d also be infected. Honestly, I was dying to know what this kid was like.

When I arrived on the other side, I was shocked. I had never seen that many students huddled in a circle and cheering about something. I was able to push myself into the middle of the circle, but the “plague” wasn’t anywhere to be found. All I could see were the backs of two or three of the tall boys who wore our school uniform. They were all pointing and talking to something on the ground. While I didn’t really know what they were talking about, and I couldn’t really see who or what they were talking to, my assumption was the plague.

Then I realized that the majority of the older fans were laughing, so I laughed too. As if whatever the tall guys were saying was humorous somehow. Before long, I was laughing too. Eventually, I actually started to enjoy myself. Gradually the guys at the back started making room. My heart was racing as I craned my neck to see what was going on in the inner circle. I was actually hoping to see the face of a monster looking plague or perhaps a Frankenstein copy or something. But I was taken aback as the subject turned out to be just an average boy.

He may not have been the handsomest man I’d ever laid eyes on, he may have had glasses that were monstrous on his face, he may even have a birthmark covering around less than a third of his face, but to me, he was simply a regular human being. Who was worthy of being treated like one.

The smirk began to fade from my face. It was then that I realized this wasn’t a joke, this wasn’t funny, this was bullying. For a moment, there were simply too many things and concepts swirling around my head, and I just didn’t know what to do. I remember thinking and questioning myself with things like: Do I go in and save him? Do I even go in and report it to a teacher?

But rather than staying true to my heart, and doing what was proper, I did nothing. I was standing there like a statue, unable to even blink. The yelling noises seemed to cease to exist. And I seemingly had vanished in my own world. I felt bad for having ever laughed at him. The feeling of complete sorrow, the feeling of sheer hate and remorse, the feeling of resentment made a pact and hovered over me.

I was choking on salt water, but too afraid and too timid to use my arms and legs to swim towards the surface. He must have noticed me, because he looked up at me with whatever strength was left in him. He had a bruise covering his entire face. He looked at me for about ten seconds and I looked at him. He then mouthed the following: “Help, please.”

Instead of sticking up for him, I receded. I stepped back, going further and further back until I stumbled and fell out of the crowd. I looked towards him until the gap in the crowd started closing. Then I walked away having trouble keeping myself from crying. I wanted to walk up and tell the bullies and the crowd that they had been unkind.

I wanted to tell all of them that they did not have the right to bully a boy who was one-third their size, they did not have the right to tell a boy that he was not handsome, just because he had a small birthmark on his face. I wanted to tell them that they were the ultimate in ignorance and failure. I wanted to tell them that what they were doing was not acceptable!

But rather, I departed and disappointed the victim. Three years have passed since it occurred, and a lot has changed and happened. But strangely, the scene is just as vivid and detailed in my mind as it was then. The pain and the remorse hurt just as painfully as they hurt back then. The encounter has become a scar that has been carved into my heart and one which refuses to heal. It is a blight that can never be removed.

I suppose he has forgotten and despised me for what I have done. And I despise myself for keeping quiet. I know, however, that it’s too late now and I have already lost a chance to be brave and to be myself. So with this opportunity, I wanted to show and tell everyone that: Sometimes what you see of me is just what I share. What you think you know about me is just what I share with you. There’s much more of me that I haven’t shared, which you have no idea at all.

Perhaps the reason why everyone is afraid to be themselves is that they might think their ideas are too bitter, not pleasing, unique and distinctive. I’m a prime example of that! I could have defended the boy and obeyed my heart, but I joined the majority and didn’t help a person in need.

I hope that people can learn from me and not filter their own unique coffee beans to fit in. Always be yourself. I want to tell everyone that it is okay to swim against the tide. You don’t always need to be in the same place as other individuals. And that’s what makes the world vibrant.

Principal Brown, members of the School Board, teachers, parents, friends, and fellow graduates, it is an honor to speak to all of you today. A little over 12 years ago I was 6, and I remember my first day of school. I was excited with my new Power Rangers lunchbox. My parents went with me with their camera, snapping pictures and wishing me good luck. And I met a friendly guy named James. Things haven’t really changed much in 12 years, in a sense.

That’s me now. OK, I did not tote my Power Rangers lunchbox but, my parents are here with their camera, snapping photos and wishing me well. My buddy James is here, and he’s still a fairly cool kid. And, I am psyched. But this is how things are different. Twelve years ago I was psyched, but I didn’t have a clue about the implications of the journey that I was going to be on. I didn’t have a clue that after 1st grade there would be 2nd grade and 3rd grade and so forth. I was just excited to be in the first grade.

Today, I understand that I am standing at the door of my future – the first day of the rest of my life. As a “computer geek” that I am, I get inspired by the words of one of our best American computer scientists, Alan Kay. He said, “The greatest way to predict the future is to invent it.” Some of us here today, as well as our parents, are wondering how our lives are going to be. It is okay to wonder but, I also think that it is important to realize that our future is not something that just happens to us. It is up to us to create.

So, graduates today, I urge you to take advantage of the opportunity before you. Apply what you have learned these last 12 years and make it practically applicable. Leave the useless (I am leaving my Power Rangers lunchbox) behind and keep with you the knowledge that will be the working parts of your best invention yet, Your Life! Congratulations!

Should Children Be Allowed to Own and Use Cellphones?

We can hardly recall a time when we did not own cell phones. We use our phones every day to communicate with our businesses, our families, and our friends. We might detest cell phones or adore them, but they are an integral part of our culture now, and there is little chance that their use will be restricted in the near future.

Even children these days are equipped with their own cell phones, not merely for family and emergency calls but to stay in touch with friends via text messaging. What are the advantages and disadvantages of allowing a child to own a cell phone?

No one would dispute the fact that a cell phone is essential for a child to have with them when there is an emergency. We live in a tough and sometimes unsafe world. Having some means of remaining in touch with your child at all times with a cell phone can contribute to their safety and provide us with a feeling of security.

Children have used cell phones to phone their parents or authorities in threatening situations. Others have even used the ability of their phone to capture images to fend off or identify predators. Secondly, as children grow up, proper use of cell phones provides for them to be given more freedom than at a younger age.

Conversely, however, owning a cell phone may also have a slightly negative effect on a child. Cell phones may prove to be a distraction, not only in school but also otherwise.

Worryingly, phones enable children to receive text messages and pictures of which their parents would not approve. And, medical professionals have already hypothesized that there may be dangers in having intense cellular waves so close to a developing body every day.

One way to solve this issue would be to provide the child with a cell phone that is limited in its capacity to make and receive calls. A parent could program a mobile device to call out to only emergency numbers. One would also be able to accept pre-programmed telephone numbers on the cellular equipment. These limitations would give the parents some assurance that their child has some means of contacting them in case of an emergency.

No one can deny that the issue of kids and cell phones is an easy one to fix. If you do have kids, however, then it will be a problem in the home, one created by you for your family. But hopefully this presentation has encouraged you to think about the advantages and disadvantages of cell phone use for the younger generation and will more effectively enable you to make your own choice.

Student body and staff, good afternoon! My name is Stephanie, and I am running for student body president. I’ll make this brief because I know you’re all excited to go home.

You might be thinking, “Should Stephanie truly be the student body president? I mean, she’s only been at our school for two years.” I do admit that I am somewhat new to Jefferson Anderson High School. At first glance, this may seem like a liability. I did not attend this school as a freshman and sophomore, and I’ve only known most of you for a couple of years.

When you put it into perspective though, there is really an advantage to hiring someone who is entering the school from another location. I bring new ideas from the last school. Are you tired of doing the same thing every year year after year? Are you prepared to do something different? Something that I noticed about this school when I first came here last year is that most of the students didn’t really get to have any of the decisions made here at the school.

Was anyone ever consulted on what you wanted to do for a fundraiser? Was anyone ever consulted on what you wanted to buy with the money we raised? Who decides those things? All of those kinds of decisions are going to be up to the student council. Who you pick as president is going to represent your whole senior class. Do you want to vote for someone to make those decisions for you when they don’t even know what you want?

If you elect me as a student council president, I assure you that I will always solicit your opinions prior to making a decision. You do have a right to have a say about the decisions that will affect you. Any and all of you can come to me with your ideas, and I promise to listen and stand for you. I’m not the most well-known candidate for president of student council, but I promise to listen to each and every one of you.

You matter. Your voice matters. Don’t vote for someone who is going to make all of the decisions for you. Don’t vote for the person who is going to decide whatever their friends want them to do. Vote for someone who wants to be your voice. Vote for someone who is concerned about what you are concerned about. Vote for me, Stephanie, student council president.
